Location

Brambling and Chaffinch from the fine weather today.

A male Brambling with well-advanced black head. I have no idea why this bird shows an orange ‘tuft’ on its head – neither males nor females show this feature normally.

A different male with more grey retained on the head. The extent of the yellow on the bill is too great for a female – and the grey head shows a few black patches.

For comparison a female Chaffinch. This is rather more tricky to separate than usual as this bird shows an unusually pale belly – the belly is usually obviously grey and a female Chaffinch and white on a Brambling
